1:29 PM (37 minutes ago) Remote control spy glasses offer built-in camera, music playbackFiled under: Digital Cameras, Portable Audio, Wearables Comically enough, these aren't the first sunglasses we've seen with a hidden camera built right in, but for those who don't need full motion video to catch someone red-handed, this much cheaper alternative should certainly do the trick. As you can tell from the not-at-all-noticeable modules flanking the sides, there's a 1.3-megapixel camera up there along with a rechargeable Li-ion, 1GB of storage and a pair of earbuds to keep the elevator music going even after you reach the eleventh floor. You'll also find USB 2.0 connectivity and a remote control for slyly snapping shots, but really, if you roll into a debutante ball with these gracing your face, expect your cover to be blown in record time.[Via The Red Ferret Journal]

1:15 PM (51 minutes ago) Ultrathin Netbook showcased at Intel Developer ForumFiled under: Laptops From what we've seen thus far, Intel's Netbook isn't exactly the prettiest piece of kit. But apparently, the unit we've been shown looks nothing like the Netbooks of the future. At the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, the company was showing off an upcoming design that looked awfully thin (and awfully attractive). As it stands, all we truly know about the lappie was that Linux was under the hood and the Atom will likely power things whenever it escapes the trade show floor and ships en masse. Still, if the price is right, we can certainly see this slab being desired by more than just schoolkids in various corners of the world.[Image courtesy of Impress]

Yes, its speeds hit 40mph within its modest 15 mile range. And yes, the engine runs silently with zero vibration. But don't blame the auto companies. They work really hard. And besides, with their limited resources, how can they be expected to compete with one guy who has limited mechanical training buying all of his parts on Craigslist? Apr 5, 2008 (2 days ago) Granular Linux Distro Preview is Worth a LookLinux.com has an interesting look at Granular Linux, a desktop-oriented distribution that's primary goal is to be easy to use. "With a single CD's worth of included programs, Granular Linux manages to cover a significant portion of normal end user needs, and those applications not already installed can be easily added through Synaptic. The slight problem with video and more serious problem with sound of my machine suggest that Granular is not without its issues, especially when most other distributions work properly on this hardware, but as this is a preview release of version 1.0 I think it can be more or less forgiven. I'd definitely recommend Granular to anyone with an interest in trying out a new distribution. " | ||

'"By 2012, more than 90 percent of enterprises will use open source in direct or embedded forms,' predicts a Gartner report, The State of Open Source 2008, which sees a 'stealth' impact for the technology in embedded form: "Users who reject open source for technical, legal or business reasons might find themselves unintentionally using open source despite their opposition.'" Apr 4, 2008 (3 days ago) Hydrodynamic Deluxe Building Set
When I was a kid I was always partial to building toys like LEGO, Construx, Ramagon, K’nex, Pipeworks and even my friend’s Capsela sets. While I’m sure they helped foster my imagination, I liked the flexibility of being able to build whatever I wanted. And while I’m not sure if it’s the best choice for young kids, this Hydrodynamic Building Set can be reconfigured into everything from a water treatment plant, to a distillation plant to even an ice cream factory. I mean what kid wouldn’t love to spend the afternoon with their very own water treatment plant! The set includes working tanks, pipes and valves that are all powered by an electric pump. All you need to supply is the water, and a bit of patience as you tweak the valves to produce the perfect flow. When fully constructed the working models look like they belong in a mad scientist’s laboratory, but they’ll probably guarantee you at least a B if you have a science fair coming up. At the least, your display will look a lot cooler than all those paper mache volcanoes. You can find it at the Discovery Channel Store for $79.95.
